Bad stats, bad stats, what you gonna do? (week ending 3/5)

Why bother highlighting the less fortunate?   Because those who forget bad stats are condemned to repeat them:

  • Rhode Island sophomore pitcher Anthony Pisani had an inning of work he’d just as soon forget last Saturday at top ranked Virginia.  His stat line: 10 hits, 10 earned runs, 1 walk and 1 strikeout. In his defense, none of Rhode Island’s other pitchers were much better as they ended up losing 22-2.
  • Last weekend’s Big Ten/Big East Challenge in St. Petersburg, FL featured another pitching meltdown, this time by West Virginia’s Chase Pickering.  Pickering, who was a West Virginia Baseball Player of the Year at Nitro High back in 2008, was lit up by Michigan State to the tune of 13 hits, 11 earned runs, 2 hit batsmen and 1 wild pitch over three innings in the 17-5 loss.
  • Maryland-Eastern Shore guard Kevin White didn’t have a bad shooting effort last night against Delaware State, going 4-of-6 from the field and ending up with 9 points.  However, he more than offset that by turning the ball over a whopping 12 times (against a single assist) in the Hawks’ 57-37 loss.  As a team, Maryland-Eastern Shore coughed it up 26 times.
  • Chicago State took a break from its Great West schedule this past Wednesday to drive across town and hook up with Northwestern.   The first half went okay for the Cougars as they stayed within 10 at the break, but the second half was a train wreck as Chicago State shot a dismal 5-for-29 from the field (17%).  Northwestern pulled away for a 72-49 victory.
  • You never want to get embarrassed by your in-state rival, but that’s exactly what happened to Utah on Wednesday against BYU.  Check out the shooting efforts for these Utes: Marshall Henderson was 1-for-7, Luka Drca was 1-for-8, Shawn Glover was 1-for-6 and Carlon Brown was 2-for-7.  As a team, Utah shot 27% in the 71-51 loss.
