No 5-0 start for USF this year

When USF visits Florida on September 11, first year Bulls coach Skip Holtz will probably wish he was back at ECU by the end of the third quarter.  But there’s a bright side for Skip, because sandwiched around that massive road tilt will be three home games against somewhat less difficult opposition: Stony Brook, Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic.

USF will almost certainly see a three-year streak of starting the season 5-0 come to an end, but they’ll most likely be 4-1 when back-to-back Big East away games against West Virginia and Cincinnati come up on the schedule.  Garnering a split in those two is imperative for the Bulls if they have any designs on 8 wins or better during the regular season.

Two high schools dominate NC’s preseason prospect list

Butler High in Matthews and Jack Britt High in Fayetteville placed two players each into Rivals’ preseason ranking of football prospects in North Carolina. Linebacker Kris Frost, who’s still undecided, checks in at #3 while his Matthews teammate, quarterback Christian LeMay (who’s verballed to Georgia) is in at #5. Jack Britt keeps churning out the blue chippers, placing tight end Eric MacLain (a Clemson committment) at #4 and defensive tackle Devonte Brown at #9.

Frost’s stated top five is Michigan, Auburn, LSU, Cal (they’re trying to raid NC again?!?) and Clemson, but he seems to be awfully fond of Auburn. Just a few weeks ago he jumped on a Greyhound bus on the spur of the moment for the five hour drive down I-85, which marked his third visit to the school. He was considered one of the better linebackers to participate in the various Nike camps the last couple of months.

Brown’s list of suitors is every bit as impressive, with Clemson, Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee making up his final four. He appears to be pretty wide open, but John Blake is putting the heat on him for North Carolina.  Although his teammate MacLain is undoubtedly trying to sway him into joining him at Clemson, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tar Heels keep him in-state.

Seantrel Henderson is a free man

Gary Klein of the LA Times reported this afternoon that USC has released Seantrel Henderson from his letter of intent with no restrictions.  Speculation was swirling this past weekend regarding whether or not he was visiting Miami, the school that’s now his most likely destination. With no restrictions in place, Miami is free to actively recruit him, and better yet, they have a scholly available for him.

However, here’s the weird part of Klein’s blog regarding the release:

Henderson is reportedly leaning toward attending Miami or Ohio State, but USC is hopeful that he could still decide to remain with the Trojans. (LA Times)

Huh?  They released him but are still hoping he sticks with him?  I guess if you love something, you gotta set it free…

It’s not IF he’ll run for more than 100 yards…

Noel Devine averaged 6.1 yards a tote for West Virginia in 2009.  Last season, the Coastal Carolina defense had the 95th worst run defense in FCS, yielding 4.5 yards a carry.  On September 4 they meet in Morgantown.  This could get VERY ugly.
