Great sports moments in 80’s music videos: Menudo

June 8, 2010 by John Stansberry

Even barely heterosexual teen heartthrobs like Menudo knew that they couldn’t rely solely on some sweet dance moves and perfectly coiffed hair to get the ladies.  That’s because at the end of the day, teenage girls have always loved the jocks.

That explains why Menudo brought out their balls for the “Hold Me” video, which is one of the biggest slices of 80’s cheese you’ll ever see.  But don’t think that the silly street football game at the beginning of the video hasn’t been influential.  At the :13 second mark, you’ll see where Tim Tebow got the inspiration for his jump pass:

Good lord, that “girl” he’s serenading in the street looks like she’s every bit of 33.  I haven’t seen that big of a romantic age differential between a man and a woman since Vili Fualaau hooked up with Mary Kay Letourneau.

After the football game, Menudo and friends take off down the middle of LA’s streets for an impromptu fun run.  The jaunt ends underneath an overpass where a basketball game breaks out.  You’ve got pigskin, jogging, hoops…hey ladies, are you watching?  It doesn’t get much jockier than this!

But I really have to call into question the kind of people that the boys from Menudo were hanging out with.  I’m no fashion expert, but a  guy wearing a yellow sweat band/yellow t-shirt/tube socks combo has never looked cool in ANY era, even the 80’s.  And a dude who pairs a pastel blue muscle shirt with a safari hat?  That outfit will get you put into every sexual offender database known to man, regardless of whether you’ve actually committed a crime or not:

Ricky Martin, who was a 13 year old member of the group at the time, was probably already a little confused about his sexual identity before the cameras started rolling.  I don’t think this video helped him in that department one bit.
