Is Chris Berman taking his tired act to Direct TV?

February 9, 2010 by John Stansberry

There’s speculation that living ESPN relic Chris Berman will take his coelacanthian act to Direct TV, more details can be found here.

Man, thank god I don’t have Direct TV.  I got a real kick out of Berman’s schtick in 1991, then less so in 1996, not so much so in 1999, even less in 2004 and now I’m just over it.

For instance, can’t Berman just say the word “Raiders” and be done with it?  Instead, he has to pull out that creepy pedophile voice every damn time and say “THA RAY-DUHS!!!”  The constant schtick gets tiring, even to a guy who pioneered it:

SI’s Pete McEntegart: Do you think some of the current ESPN anchors are stealing your shtick?

Craig Kilborn: You’re assuming that anyone still watches SportsCenter.  Kidding!  I apologize to America if I started this phenomenon [of using highlights as vehicles for wisecracks].  Just give me the scores!  If I want comedy, I’ll watch the CBS Evening News.

That was from an SI interview way back in 2002, and if I can digress for a second…what the hell ever happened to Craig Kilborn?  But that’s beside the point.

If Berman is finished in Bristol, won’t some maverick ESPN executive roll the dice and give Brian Collins a chance?:
