The ugliest field goal attempt you’ll ever see was in Tim Brewster’s must win game

October 16, 2010 by John Stansberry

Today’s Minnesota-Purdue game was mandated to be a must win for Minnesota coach Tim Brewster. The Gophers didn’t win, but that’s beside the point.  Let’s say Brewster had led Minnesota to a win over Purdue but tanked the remainder of the schedule, would that have gotten him shitcanned as well? Hell, what the powers that be should have told him was “Don’t ever lose again as long as we’re paying you.”

You gotta feel for Purdue because they would have much preferred that their involvement in a must win game have something in it for them. Alas, all the 28-17 victory over Minnesota ends up being is another stepping stone toward the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (formerly the Motor City).

Sure enough, reports are out confirming that Brewster can pretty much take the pictures down from his office wall. Marcus Fuller of the Pioneer Press wrote the following this evening:

Tim Brewster reportedly is no longer fighting for his job.

GopherIllustrated.com reported Saturday night, after the Gophers’ 28-17 loss to Purdue, that Brewster has been notified that he will not be retained after the 2010 season.

The website reported that Brewster has decided to stay and coach the team throughout the remainder of the season. A news conference is expected to be held on Sunday, the website reported. (Pioneer Press)

The Gophers really didn’t put up that much of a fight today in trying to help Brewster keep his job.  But when a team has been coached as badly as this one has, what more can you expect?

At the end of the first half, I thought Purdue coach Danny Hope would go ahead and sign Brewster’s pink slip for him by going for it on 4th down at the Gopher 1-yard line with his team up 14-0.  Hope just seems like the kind of prick who wouldn’t just try to get a guy fired, but would try to run it up in the process.

Much to my surprise, though, Hope sent Carson Wiggs out to attempt a field goal. Here’s what ensued:

What the hell was that? Was Wiggs trying to hit the end zone pylon? You see, Danny Hope, you should have gone with your first instinct, which was to be an insufferable shit and go for it. And look at poor Brewster trying to get his team fired up over a missed field goal attempt by the opposition. He really was a dead man walking.
