Wear twins time their transfers from UNC to most screw with Roy Williams

May 6, 2010 by John Stansberry

The Wear twins have decided to get out of Chapel Hill while the getting’s good, much to the surprise of Roy Williams. Travis averaged 3.5 points on the season for North Carolina while David chipped in with a 2.9 average before going on the shelf with a hip injury in February. Word is they’ll head back to a school in their native Califoria, with UCLA being a possible destination.

I’ll be brutally honest, I thought these guys were a little overrated coming out of Mater Dei High, especially after Riverside’s Kawhi Leonard (now a stud at San Diego State) terrorized them in sectionals play last year.

So while I’ll be stunned if either twin is ever all-conference material, their departure does leave a frontcourt void for Williams because it comes on top of Ed Davis declaring for the draft and Deon Thompson’s graduation.

After scanning the roster, the only true post players who are returning are Tyler Zeller and John Henson.  And Henson could use a ham sandwich or three to add some bulk before next season.

It appears Will Graves will have to shift over and log more interior minutes…which could undermine his strength, which is shooting the 3-pointer. There’s no true low post option among the incoming class, either, with Harrison Barnes being a true wing player.

What stings for Williams is that the recruiting pickings are pretty damn slim this late in the game. In terms of immediate replacements, there are no impact big men left out there. For a program with Carolina’s stature, the remaining options appear to be stop gaps at best.

Brandon Mobley (6′9″, 215 lbs.) is a better than average power forward out of Savannah, GA but he’s a bit of a project. He’s got offers from Cincinnati, Indiana and South Carolina. Trevor Clemmings is a 6′9″ bruiser out of Paterson, NJ but he’s gotten little love outside of the Big East.

Another option out there is probably Kadeem Jack out of New York. He’s an athletic 6′8″ kid with solid offers from Florida, UConn, Arizona, Miami and Arkansas. However, this is all wild speculation, who knows how Williams will scramble to fill these roster spots.
