West Seattle High won’t win the Washington state title this year

September 24, 2010 by John Stansberry

How’s this for a numbers problem for a high school football team: West Seattle High was down to 11 healthy players last Friday due to injuries and eligibility issues.  So when the Wildcats got down 48-0 at the half to O’Dea, head coach Davis Lura saw no choice but to forfeit.

Here’s Mason Kelly of the Seattle Times providing some background on how Lura ended up with so few players:

Lura’s Wildcats have experienced a sharp turnabout after finishing in a tie for first place with a 5-1 record (6-4 overall) in the Metro League’s Sound Division last season, and was 6-0 (and 9-2 overall) in 2008.

He said his 2010 program started with 36 varsity players, including six seniors, in August but dwindled quickly with a rash of injuries and eligibility issues.

He said once some players heal and others get their grades in order, West Seattle’s numbers should rise closer to 40 again. He is expecting between 20-to-22 players to suit up against Franklin this week.

Of those players, only one started last season. (Seattle Times)

Jesus, isn’t this West SEATTLE High?  I can see if West Myrtlesville High can’t attract enough dudes to play football, but wouldn’t a school in a big city have enough able bodied males ready to trot out there and fill in for the flunkies?  Then again, it is Seattle, where most of the teenage boys are probably in garage bands hoping that America once again pays attention to the region’s music scene.

Speaking of music, I really don’t think Lura would have had to forfeit if he had played his team a certain inspirational song at halftime:

How blessed is playing the air guitar on another guy’s leg?  Screw the touchdown passes, THIS made Peyton Manning a Hall of Famer.
